of the founders of the Broadcast Executives Society: Paul
Mulvihill, Andy McDermott, Bill Byles, Gordon Ferris and Reo
Thompson.
Awarded
annually to a third or fourth year student enrolled in Ryerson’s
Advertising & Sales course or the School of Radio and
Television Arts. The winner “must achieve high academic
standing in the course curriculum, as well as demonstrate
by participation and example the appropriate personal traits,
attitudes and aptitudes necessary to ensure success in selling.”
The award
value is $1,000.
Ruth
Hancock Scholarship Foundation
Background
Awarded
in memory of Ruth Hancock, who died in 1973. Ruth was executive
assistant to Murray Chercover, president of CTV. For 12 years,
she was the manager of the Toronto office of the CAB
and executive secretary of the BES.
The award
was originally established by CTV, BES and the CAB, who maintained
the fund jointly. Receiving entries and selecting the annual
award winners is handled primarily by CAB, with judging duties
shared by the three parties. Winners are announced at the
annual CAB convention. The BES has recently assumed responsibility
of the foundation's portfolio, which is now self-funding.
In 2002, the Canadian Association of Broadcast Representatives
replaced CTV as a sponsoring organization with the donation
of $20,000.
Purpose
To provide
educational scholarships for students enrolled in courses
devoted to broadcast communications. Winners must exhibit
leadership qualities, a strong character, willingness to help
others, and also demonstrate a genuine interest in pursuing
a career in broadcasting by enthusiastically completing course
related and extra curricular activities connected to broadcasting.
Currently, 3 scholarships of $1,500 are provided annually.
Application forms in printable form for the Ruth Hancock Scholarship are
available here.
Deadline for applications is June 30, 2010.
Past Winners
Sarah Glen
who is
currently studying in the Communication and Culture
Joint-Graduate Program of Ryerson and York Universities, in
Toronto. She chose to pursue graduate studies after spending
three years sharing her journalism skills with street-involved
youth. Sarah volunteers with Recreate Art Studio, a non-profit
art therapy organization that works with youth in Hamilton. She
sees a role for media professionals, particularly those in
broadcasting, to use their skills to help create a space for
youth to interact with their communities.
Carolyn Marie Smith
who is a Journalism student majoring in Broadcasting at Ryerson
University, while also interning at Q107/AM640 Toronto Radio.
Carolyn, or “Carly”, has been recognized for her hard work, her
great intelligence, and her natural leadership abilities. Her
course director at Ryerson has said that she is “bound for
success in broadcast journalism.” Carly has indicated that her
long-term goal is to produce her own news/talk radio show on
AM640.
Esteban Vargas
who is now
studying Communications at Concordia University in Montréal. He
has considerable experience working with Montréal’s CHOM-FM,
CJAD-AM and Mix 96, where his dedicated efforts in a variety of
areas earned the respect and appreciation of his colleagues and

documentary-related projects, Esteban has discovered the
positive impact the media can have within society. As a result,
he would like to pursue this interest in documentaries and take
it further.
